Description
ABSTRACT
Arterial Hypertension (HTA) is one of the most important and prevalent factors of cardiovascular risk among the primary health care consultations. Its management requires taking action on diet, exercising and using conventional pharmacological treatments. Reiki is a Bioenergetic Complementary Therapy that consists in the manual channeling and transmission of vital energy present in every living being, and it is focused on the global curation and harmonization of the individuals.
OBJECTIVE
Evaluating the effectiveness of Reiki in the regularization of arterial tension in people with HTA between the ages of 45 and 75 that are being treated by the EAP Dreta de l’Eixample (Primary Health Care Team) in Barcelona.
METHODOLOGY
Quasi-experimental interventional study with control group.
AREA OF STUDY
CAP (Center of Primary Health Care).
POPULATION OF STUDY
1930 habitantes hipertensos.
DATA COLLECTION TOOL
1,930 hypertensive citizens. Sample: 78 Experimental Group (EG) and 78 Control Group (CG) distributed by simple probability sample.
INSTRUMENTO DE RECOGIDA DE DATOS
Cuestionario del estudio de investigación ad-hoc.
PROCEDURE
Durante 12 semanas, una vez a la semana se tomaba la Tensión Arterial (TA) y la Frecuencia Cardíaca (FC) de los GC y GE. Además el GE recibía una sesión de Reiki de 20 minutos con toma posterior de TA y FC.
DATA ANALYSIS
During 12 weeks. Once a week, the TA and FC of the GE and GC was measured and, in addition, the GE received a 20-minute Reiki session with subsequent measurement of TA and FC.
RESULTS
The socio-demographic profile of the participants was 54.55% women and 45.5% men aged 64.12 and DE=7.06 on average. The subjects that underwent the 12 sessions were 70 participants from the GC and 73 from the GE.
CONCLUSIONS
There is a statistically significant improvement in the FC with the use of Reiki. However, there is a clinically but not statistically significant improvement in the systolic TA, since it improved in 9 out of 12 sessions. There are no improvements in the diastolic TA. We deem it adequate to carry out studies on the effectiveness of complimentary therapies following the scientific methodology used in conventional studies.
